Compress Image to 1MB

Compress a JPG to 1MB, or convert a photo to 1MB, automatically. Free and private.

Why 1MB specifically

1MB is the standard cap on a great many web forms and email attachment rules. Almost any photo can be brought under it while still looking essentially untouched.

Forms almost never explain how to meet their limit. They reject the upload, show a red message and leave you to work it out. This page exists so you can drop the file in and get one that fits.

What 1MB looks like in practice

1MB is a loose limit. A photo around 2,000 pixels wide fits comfortably, with detail that holds up even when zoomed in. Most phone photos only need their dimensions or quality reduced slightly to get under it.

Because there is plenty of room, this is the setting where compression is hardest to notice.

Why a form asks for 1MB

Many portals set a 1MB cap per image so servers do not fill with huge camera files. Meeting it is usually a matter of reducing a multi-megabyte photo, not squeezing a small one.

If the result is already well under 1MB, you do not need to compress further; a smaller file does not make the form any more likely to accept it.

Frequently asked questions

How do I compress an image to 1MB?

Drop your image above. It is automatically compressed until it fits under 1MB, then you download it. No settings to work out.

Will the photo still be usable?

For most photos, yes. The tool reduces quality and dimensions gradually until the target is met, so it takes the least damaging route available. Very small targets on a very detailed photo will visibly soften it — that is unavoidable at any tool.

Which formats can I upload?

JPG, PNG and WebP all work. The result is always a JPG, since that is what form uploads expect and what compresses best for photographs.

Why is my phone photo bigger than 1MB?

Modern phone cameras produce 3–8MB images because of their high resolution. Reducing the dimensions to something sensible usually gets under 1MB on its own.

How do I compress a JPG to 1MB free online?

Drop your JPG in the box above. The tool brings it under 1MB and you download it straight away. It is free, needs no sign-up, and runs in your browser so your photo is never uploaded.

My photo is only 1.5MB. Will it lose quality?

Barely. Going from 1.5MB to under 1MB is a small step, and the tool keeps the highest quality that fits.

Is my file uploaded anywhere?

No. The work happens in your own browser, so the file never leaves your device.
